We were fortunate enough to interview Marina Diamandis of Marina and the Diamonds when she was in Vancouver for her Lonely Hearts Club Tour. Diamandis was an absolute sweetheart as we chatted about her newest album, her fashion inspiration and of course, the fans. Check it out below.
How are you doing today?

I’m pretty good.
The weather could be nicer.

I know! It’s making me feel at home though; London’s very much like this.
Your second album, Electra Heart, was released earlier this year. Can you tell us more about the story behind it?

I based it around a fictional character called Electra Heart, as a way of telling a story about love and discussing the idea of heartbreak and what we all think love should be.
Do you have a favourite song off the album?

I think Bubblegum Bitch; it’s very fun to play live, and Starring Role as well.
Electra Heart also debuted as No. 1 on the UK Charts. Do you think that this accomplishment resulted in Marina and the Diamonds being better known internationally?

I’m not sure. I think the number one definitely helped but I think it’s more the fact that stuff like Primadonna and How to Be a Heartbreaker, they’ve captured the audience’s imagination more. I think that’s definitely opened me up to a bigger fan base.
What’s the writing process like for you?

Well, I always think of lyrics first. Sometimes I can be on a train or a bus, it doesn’t really matter. If I think of a line, I just write it down. Then, I might come to it two months later, sit down at the piano and that’s how I start all my songs.
You are currently on the North American portion of your Lonely Hearts Club Tour. How has the experience been so far?

Wonderful, best tour ever. It’s been so much fun and I can’t wait for it to get bigger and bigger as well.
After this, you’re going back on tour with Coldplay.

Yeah, that’s going to be really good. I’m doing four more weeks with them.
Do you have any funny moments or fan encounters you’d like to share?

Fan gifts have been wild. Last night, I got a Barbie doll that had Electra Heart roots, heart on the cheek. The other day, I got a tiara that had a heart shaped American flag with guns on it.
People are very creative.

[Laughs] They are, they really are. It’s incredible.
Your fashion sense is very unique. Where do you draw inspiration from?

I think most of it comes from my personality. I like to mix classic style with humorous pieces. You know, this, is like a housewife on acid [laughs]. I like to take the musical side and the humour from the album and apply it to this side.
People seem to enjoy it, especially the signature heart on the cheek.

I know! A lot of people are doing it, it’s cool. I love it.
Is this your first time in Vancouver?

It’s my second time here. First time, I came with Katy Perry and this time, on my own.
Unfortunately, you’re not here for longer periods of time.

No, we got in at 5am today and I haven’t seen anything.
You’ll have to go sightseeing around the city one day.

I know!
You have previously mentioned the influence of photographer Cindy Sherman on Electra Heart. Do you have any other favourite artists?

I really like Jenny Holzer. [She] does these light installations and puts huge quotes that she has written across Houses of Parliament or iconic buildings. She also has this piece, called Truisms, which is incredible. It’s like, true facts about life that everyone can relate to.
Where do you see yourself in five years?

Still being an artist. I guess I will have evolved more by then. I would hope that I would be on my fifth album.
If you could be any ice cream flavour, which would you be and why?

[Laughs] That’s a brilliant question! I always liked the blue ice cream, I’m not sure whether that’s bubblegum. In some countries, it’s blueberry and others, bubblegum. I think I’d be bubblegum flavour or mint chocolate chip. I’m not sure why, I just really love it!
Is there anything else you’d like to say to your fans, or the Diamonds?

Yes, thank you for supporting me and making this tour so much fun. I really hope I get to go to a lot more countries with it so I get to visit a lot of different fans.
It was a pleasure interviewing Marina. Make sure to check out her newest album, Electra Heart, and catch her on tour with Coldplay.
